Interstate

From 100 Best Typefaces

Interstate was developed in 1993 by type designer-- Tobias Frere-Jones, and with the assistance of Cyrus Highsmith. Jones and Highsmith expanded the font into a plethora of enticing text and display style available on the market. This typeface is classified as a neo-grotesque sans serif. It is a digital typeface, and licensed by Font Bureau. It was based on the road signage which was designed in the 1970s by the United States Federal Highway Administration.

Interstate is very clear, and legible, therefore this typeface helps drivers find their way along the highways every day and absorbed at a glance everywhere we drive. Interstate is a great choice for extended texts. The font family now consists of 40 versions, which include italic, condensed, and compressed versions.

The terminals of ascending and descending strokes are cut at an angle to the stroke (see lowercase t, and l), and on curved strokes (see lowercase e and s), terminals are drawn at a 90 ° angle to the stroke, positioning them at an angle to the baseline. Counters are open, even in the bold and bold condensed weights, further contributing to legibility.

Interstate is not only used on road signs, but also recommended to use on newspapers, magazines, books, web and often used for corporate design and quite flexible enough for a broad range of “topics”.

Interstate is very popular on everything from advertisements, website, publications, corporate branding, television programming, product design, and book cover etc.

Interstate is one of the most popular fonts in Germany. Many large organizations are using Interstate as their logotype and branding materials, for example, CitiBank logo, and US Army ad campaign in 2006.
